Pope Frances Says America Should Welcome, Protect Undocumented Immigrants

Pope Francis has decided to weigh in on the current immigration crisis in America.

The Pontiff called on not just the U.S., but the rest of the world to no longer view mass migration as an emergency but rather "a hallmark of our society and a challenge."

The Pope also said the issue of migration is "present in all continents and in almost all countries."

According to a report by Breitbart News, Vatican Radio reporter Emmer McCarthy stated that one of Francis' main concerns with regard to immigration is "the tens of thousands of children who migrate alone, unaccompanied, to escape poverty and violence."

The Pope elaborated on the subject of child migrants, stating that "this is a category of migrants...who cross the border with the United States under extreme conditions and in pursuit of a hope that in most cases turns out to be in vain."

He also fears that the numbers of immigrant children undertaking the migration to America "are increasing day by day."

According to Francis, undocumented immigrants in Central America, South America and Mexico are often "forced to emigrate" and "are obliged to separate from their families."

The Pope's comments came as he spoke at the Mexico-Holy See Colloquium on Migration and Development.

Among others who also spoke to the Colloquium was Cardinal Parolin. According to Rebecca Hamilton of Patheos, Parolin added, "Whether they are traveling because of poverty, or violence, or with the hope of reuniting with relatives on the other side of the border, it is urgent to protect them and help them because their vulnerability is greater and they are defenseless against any abuse or misfortune."

Pope Francis also asked that everyone should embrace a new perspective regarding undocumented immigrants.

He also called on those adhering to feelings of "defensiveness and fear, indifference and marginalization" to discard such conceptions.

It is the Pope's vision that all nations should be reborn into societies which are "capable of building a better, more just and fraternal world," instead of the far too prevalent "throwaway culture."
