The Elder Scrolls Online is one of the top MMO games set to appear in 2014, and fans are eager to start playing the game when it is first released for the PC on April 4. However, some younger fans may not be able to purchase the game, as the game has received a Mature rating from the ESRB.

Bethesda announced this news through Twitter, stating that although they are surprised and upset that The Elder Scrolls Online received the Mature rating, the company will not be challenging the ratings board to try and bring the game down to the desired Teen rating:

"The ESRB advised us that it has given The Elder Scrolls Online a Mature rating," the company tweeted Wednesday. "While we may disagree with the ESRB's determination, we do not plan to challenge the rating, and we are unwilling to change the game's content to achieve a different rating. The game was have created is the one we want our fans to be able to play."

The company also stated that, due to the game having this higher-than-expected content rating, they are in the process of setting up age gates for the game's website along with the trailers for the game so that the content has the proper age restrictions.

The ESRB rates video games before they are released in North America as a guide for retailers as well as consumers so that they have an idea of what sort of content will be in the game. The Teen rating does not carry any restrictions on who can purchase the game, but the Mature rating does. Under most retailers minors under the age of 17 cannot purchase M rated games, so having The Elder Scrolls Online received that rating could prevent millions of potential users from buying the game.

The Elder Scrolls Online will feature content drawing from many previous entries into the series, Including the last game in the series, the Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. The game will first be available on the PC on April 4, but the game is also set to appear in June for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as well. This will be the first time that the Elder Scrolls series will come to the MMO genre, but some fans are upset that the game will come with a subscription fee instead of being free to play like many new MMO games.
