The Chicago Cubs want to travel to Cuba next year to play in the spring training games.

According to ESPN, the team is really interested in playing for the said tournament if the MLB can iron out the details for it.

"MLB is exploring the possibility of a spring-training game against the Cuban national team. If and when MLB approves that and the league moves forward, we would be one of many candidates to play in that game," Cubs president Theo Epstein said in the same report.

He added that the games are expected to happen toward the end of the spring training noting that there could be a problem on the schedule since the team will have a season opener in California.

But according to ESPN, an MLB spokesperson has confirmed that there are discussions on the participation of the United States in the games after the country restored diplomatic relations with Cuba.

"It would be an enriching experience for the players and get a feel for Cuban culture and play the national team and start to get an understanding of Cuban baseball in a way that few of us have," added Epstein.

Sports Illustrated noted that the Cubs have a Cuban-born player in the person go Jorge Soler. The team also has other international talents like Starlin Castro, Eloy Jimenez, Miguel Amaya, Yonathan Perlaza and Eddy Julio Martinez, among others.

With this lineup, it is could be said that there is a good chance that the team will be allow to play in Cuba.

But Epstein said there is still no final word if the Cubs will really be the team going to Cuba for the spring training games.

"I don't to speculate too much about it because it may not actually happen and we may not be the team. But it would obviously be an enriching experience for the players and staff that went down there," the Cubs president told the Chicago Sun-Times.

The same report added that aside from the Cubs, the Chicago White Sox are also being considered by the league for the exhibition game in Cuba against the country's national team. The MLB is hoping to secure an agreement for the said game.

Sixteen years ago, the Baltimore Orioles was the first MLB team to play in Cuba for two exhibition games in 40 years. The team also played in Baltimore two months after in May 1999.

The Cubs will be looking forward to the news if they will indeed be given the chance to go to Cuba and join the exhibition game.
