Julia and Ed's inappropriate relationship will be the focal point on an all-new episode of the "Parenthood," which returns to NBC from its winter hiatus Thursday, Jan. 2.

Before the series went on a mid-winter break, fans may recall that Ed and Julia shared a brief kiss after Julia asked him to stop contacting her. Their kiss only made things worse for Julia and her husband Joel who have had a rough year together and were in the middle of rebuilding their relationship.

According to an official synopsis about the upcoming episode "Promises,"

"Julia gets confronted by Ed and Joel steps in. Zeek makes a new friend while Camille is away. Drew remembers old feelings and Natalie gets jealous. Carl attends a fundraiser with Sarah and she is pleasantly surprised to learn more about him," reports Lauren-Online.net.

In the buildup to the new episode, NBC released an exclusive sneak peak video teaser. In the clip, Julia and Ed's secret relationship evolves into a Braverman family-wide problem once Adam tells Crosby that Ed kissed their sister. Adam then asks his younger brother to keep a close watch on him at the school's auction to ensure that Ed, a recently separated father, keeps his distance from Julia.

Later on in the season, the show's executive producer Sarah Watson revealed to TVLine that fans can look forward to the seeing Ryan resurface in a major way despite his announcement in the last episode that is reenlisting in the Army.

"Matt Lauria will be back -that's not the last we've seen of Ryan," Watson confirmed. "He will be back in a big and spectacular way. And I'm not going to say anything more than that, other than get your Kleenex ready."

Watson also touched on how Ryan's return will affect his girlfriend, Amber.

"This is Amber's first really adult, raw relationship, and things like that don't end as cleanly or as easily as you'd want them to," she added. "This is definitely something we're going to see continue to play out for her."

"Parenthood" resumes its current fifth season on Thursday, Jan. 2 with the airing of "Promises" on NBC.
