Paralympian Oscar Pistorius, who was convicted for shooting and killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp two years ago, has been released from his jail in South Africa and is now under house arrest.

According to Yahoo Sports, Pistorius will serve the remaining four years of his sentence for manslaughter inside a luxurious mansion in Pretoria.

In February 2013, the paralympian killed his girlfriend after he fired at her at a closed bathroom door, claiming that he thought she was an intruder.

His release, as per Yahoo Sports, followed guidelines in South Africa "to allow non-dangerous prisoners to be freed upon serving about one-sixth of their sentence."

In an interview with CTV News, Pistorius' spokesperson, Anneliese Burgess, confirmed that the paralympian is now with "home with his family."

"The family is happy that Oscar is at home," Burgess added.

She also said that the release was relayed to them at short-notice with the Department of Corrections, noting that the decision of releasing Pistorius was decided by the Kgosi Mampuru II prison.

"The handling of the actual placement is an operational matter of the local management, and how they handle it is their prerogative that is carried out in the best interest of all parties concerned, the victims, the offender and the Department of Correction Services," explained the department spokesperson Manelisi Wolela in the CTV News report.

The Week, meanwhile, noted that the justice ministry earlier blocked Pistorius' release last August, saying "the decision to release him was made before the ten-month period was over."

Despite being under house arrest, the paralympian will reportedly be under correctional supervision until Oct. 20, 2019. He is also expected to continue psychotherapy and prohibitions of the Fire Arms Control Act.

A Steenkamp family lawyer said that the victim's parents, June and Barry, were not anymore surprised with the decision, saying they already expected it.

But Yahoo Sports said that the family still wants to see justice being served for their daughter and that they are "not done fighting."

It added that the case will be elevated to the Supreme Court of South Africa by next month to charge Pistorius with murder for Steenkamp's death, since a law in the country "does not prohibit a conviction even if a defendant is found guilty of a different charge."

In September last year, Pistorius was acquitted of the murder charge against him and was only convicted of culpable homicide or manslaughter.

Case prosecutors have earlier expressed intention to appeal his acquittal, noting that the paralympian had knowledge of what happened when he fired his gun through the bathroom door on that unfateful day.
