Camera phones have drastically improved over the past few years (remember the time when a 1MP camera was all the rage?), but there is still no way they were able to outdo the crisp and clear results of a DSLR.

Tech Radar reported that MediaTek is working on professional grade cameras for smartphones. Speaking at the firm's Executive forum, Senior VP at MediaTek Jeffrey Ju explained how the company is working on a new camera technology for mobile devices, promising a DSLR-like photo experience on mobile phones as they integrate new features to their new flagship chip, called the Helio X20.

MediaTek's new Imaging solution aims tot take photography to the next level --- which means that it will be equipped with low-light shots, brighter, more natural colors and an improved HDR with a hopeful less pixelated zoom feature.

For more professional shots, the company also developed a real-time depth engine that allows smartphone cameras to blur the background and give focus on the subject. This feature is possible with a larger aperture depth and happens live on-screen, giving you a preview of your shot before you even hit the capture key, like a DSLR lens would do.

Finally, there is also the fast focus system, which the company claims is 4 times faster than the current autofocus in smartphones, making it possible for later models to snap fast-moving shots.

This technology will definitely up your game on your social media accounts, but when can you expect this feature to launch?

Sooner than you think, actually. According to the Irish Examiner, MediaTek is on the fast track to developing the technology and it is expected that smartphones will already be equipped with the Helio X20 chip by 2016 --- if MediaTek makes good on their claims.

However, despite MediaTek's seemingly new technology, it seems that there are others who are cynical about the results. In a discussion in Quora, for instance, Quora writer Bruno D Rodrigues says that the laws of physics simply won't allow for that to happen, explaining that reducing sensor size is not possible when pixel numbers are increased, hence, no matter how phone companies may try, a 35mm DSLR will always have better quality than a phone camera with the same number of pixels.

MediaTek begs to differ, but until then, let's wait and see what happens when results come out.

However, video-wise is a completely different story. A review from FStoppers already said that the iPhone 6S already takes better videos than the professional Nikon camera, which is, admittedly, a surprise.

Do you think it is possible for a smartphone to have a better photo quality compared to a DSLR?
