Two people were killed and a third seriously injured when their plane crashed at the Colombian Andes on Friday.

The victims were all crew members of Tom Cruise's upcoming film "Mena," which is currently filming in Colombia. According to The Associated Press, those killed by the accident were veteran Hollywood pilot Alan Purwin and Venezuelan Carlos Berl, while American Jimmy Lee Garland survived the crash. An aviation agency official said that all three were experienced pilots but it's still unclear who among them was in command of the plane when it crashed.

Cruise, also a pilot, reportedly crossed the Colombian Andes in a helicopter 10 minutes before the trio's crash, which happened while they are returning to the city of Medellin "on the twin-engine Piper-Aerostar 600 after a day of filming with Cruise," The Associated Press further reported. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

"Mena" will showcase Cruise as Barry Seal, a hustler and pilot who worked with drug cartel kingpin Pablo Escobar before being recruited by the CIA as an informant and to run one of the U.S.' biggest covert operations. The movie is bowing on Jan. 6, 2017 and is directed by Doug Liman, who also helmed Cruise's 2014 sci-fi film "Edge of Tomorrow," Deadline reported.

The official said that around 5PM on Friday, Cruise flew from the colonial town of Santa Fe de Antioquia in one of the two helicopters carrying the production crew. Upon arrival at Medellin's Olaya Herrera airport with nightfall drawing near, they gave notice to air traffic controllers when the second plane didn't turn up, as written by The Associated Press.

"A plane overhead located the downed aircraft just below a high ridge thanks to a distress signal, allowing rescuers to arrive to the crash site quickly and rush Garland to a hospital in Medellin, where he was in critical but stable condition," the news outlet added. Garland reportedly went through three operations overnight and a doctor from the U.S. is flying to Colombia to assist in his recuperation.

The official noted that the three crew members had crossed the route at least half a dozen times in past days. But they flew without the assistance of instruments and could have been confused by the thick formations of cloud that usually occur near the Andes' crest, The Associated Press wrote.

Purwin, founder and president of Helinet Technologies, worked in huge Hollywood movies such as "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Pearl Harbor," the news outlet noted. He had shared photos from the set of "Mena," including one with Cruise and other cast members. Purwin's last Instagram post a few days ago was of a snapshot of planes landing on a dirt runway.
