Hundreds of fans welcomed veteran TV host Don Francisco in a New York plaza as the city names a street in his honor.

The ceremony took place in Washington Heights at 168th Street & Broadway on Tuesday, Sept. 8, Fox News Latino reported. From now on, a stretch of the street will bear the name "Don Francisco Blvd" in tribute to the Chilean "Sabado Gigante" host, whose real name is Mario Kreutzberger.

The recognition came from Univision Communications Inc. and the City of New York, Latina wrote. "Don Francisco Boulevard" was unveiled by NYC Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez and Univision's President of Programming and Content Alberto Ciurana after the 74-year-old TV personality was presented with a City Proclamation.

Last April, Univision announced via an official statement that "Sabado Gigante," which first aired 53 years ago and was hosted and created by Kreutzberger, will air its final episode on Sept. 19. "Sabado Gigante" was named as the longest-running variety show on Spanish-language television, a separate report from Fox News Latino noted. It has been transmitted in countries such as Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, El Salvador, and Honduras, the news outlet listed.

"I have no words to thank our viewers for the support, loyalty and enthusiasm with which they have honored us through the years and which have allowed the show to become an unprecedented success in the history of this medium," Kreutzberger said in a press release months ago, as quoted by Fox News Latino.

He added that "Sabado Gigante" "worked tirelessly" with the "utmost dedication, humility and deep respect" to give the audience exactly what they want to watch, Fox News Latino wrote. Two years ago, it was reported that the TV host will cut back on his duties and two young presenters will be included in the program's lineup. He also hinted at retiring for years, CNN noted.

According to Kreutzberger, the last episode of "Sabado Gigante" will be dedicated to all the people who have worked on the show during its entire run, Fox News Latino wrote.

"Sabado Gigante" premiered on Chile's Channel 13 in 1962, with production moving to Miami, Florida in 1986. Over the years, "Sabado Gigante" altered its comedy segments and appearance, but has maintained Kreutzberger as its core content, the news outlet noted.

Despite the show's conclusion, Kreutzberger will continue working in Univision on new projects such as entertainment specials and campaigns, Fox News Latino added. CNN wrote that he will develop new talent for the network and will also carry on as the host of his annual TeletonUSA, which raises money for disabled children.
