If plans will push through, Cuban iconic dance band Los Van Van will tour across the United States this summer 2015.

According to a report from Billboard, this could be the group's fifth tour in the U.S., "but the first without Van Van founder Juan Formell, who died last May at the age of 71." Since then, Formell's son Samuel, who also serves as the drummer of the band, took over as the leader.

Samuel, 47, said that their latest album, titled "Fantasia," is dedicated to his late father.

"Any conversation about Cuba has to mention [Los Van Van], and we are sure that wherever Juanito's music goes, his spirit will be there too," the younger Formell said during a massive outdoor concert at the University of Havana in December. Billboard explained that the event is a celebration of the band's 45th anniversary in the music scene.

He said that the plan is to start the tour in late July, with stops in cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Houston, San Francisco, and others, the news outlet noted.

The Van Van singer also stated that he is "in favor of ending the U.S. embargo and that he would like to see free elections in Cuba." According to the musician, there has to be "urgent change" to save the country, Billboard reported.

Juan Formell as One of the Most Recognized Cuban Artists

The late Formell was one of the most well-known Cuban musicians during his time - internationally or locally. According to a separate report from Billboard, the artist's music "transcended boundaries: national, generational, and political."

When Formell died, numerous fans and his fellow artists, including Luis Enrique and Nklabe, expressed their sadness and condolences for the musician, the outlet recalled.

"The loss of Formell is without a doubt a heavy blow for Cuban culture," Cuban Music Institute officials said in a statement published in the newspaper Granma, as quoted by Billboard. "An ambassador for Cuban music and a maestro for various generations of artists. With his death Cuba loses one of its greatest and most prolific sons."

Formell started immersing himself in the world of music as early as age 15. He joined the newly formed Revolutionary National Police band as bass player, and performed with several well-known orchestras during his time. He founded Los Van Van in 1969, aspiring to "refresh Cuban dance music" and "create a new sound," Billboard added.

In 2013, Formell was honored by the Latin Grammy Academy with a special career Award for Artistic Excellence. He dedicated the recognition "to Cuban musicians and to all of the Cubans around the world," the news outlet added.
