The war drama movie, "Fury," starring Brad Pitt, ranked high at the box office charts this weekend defeating "Gone Girl" which previously held the top spot.

Directed by David Ayer, the intense film reached $23.5 million beating the $17.8 million earned by the film adaptation based on the book written by Gillian Flynn.

According to box office film analyst Phil Contrino, "Fury" has the biggest known marketing tool used by studios, and that is the main star himself, Brad Pitt, USA Today reports.

"Crowds and critics alike were impressed by the film, which received an 80% critical rating on RottenTomatoes.com and an A-minus audience grade on CinemaScore." USA Today added.

Pitt portrays the role of an army sergeant who leads the Sherman tank and its crew composed of five people as they strike Nazi Germany. The rest of the cast members also include Scott Eastwood, Michael Pena, Jon Bernthal, Jason Isaacs and the ever controversial Shia LaBeouf, states the Hollywood Reporter.

Sony distribution chief Rory Bruer added that aside from the numerous female fans that are attracted to Pitt's ever handsome looks, the theme of the movie also made a strong impact to males and the war veterans.

The 50-year-old Pitt mentioned in a report by BBC News how he hopes his new war movie will put more light to the psychic trauma that soldiers have suffered from the war, especially those from World War II. Before "Fury," Pitt portrayed the role of a soldier in Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds". While filming "Fury", his actress wife turned director, Angelina Jolie, was working on her upcoming film "Unbroken," which happens to be a WWII themed movie as well.
