Swimmer Michael Phelps is confident that his return to competitive swimming will be an easy ride.

Phelps, who had his own taste of defeat, has been pushed to rise above all the losses he experienced, Reuters said in a report.

During the Pac Pacific championships in Australia, which is also his first international competition since his retirement, Phelps appeared confident in what he can do.

It was noted in the same report that his defeat at the recently concluded National Championships was a result of some "simple mistakes" that have already been fixed.

"I have been working on the basics that hopefully make a big improvement. At nationals, I missed a couple of walls, jammed a couple of walls - those were the big things that I guess I forgot how to do. They are the mistakes you make when you are 11 or 12 as an age-group swimmer," he told the members of the media.

Phelps also explained that the mistakes he committed in the past were just signs of "rustiness" which he said he will iron out before bigger swim competition events.

"I probably just haven't had enough (racing) experience over the last year. I hate to lose but I know it is not going to come back overnight. I would rather have those instances now than further down the road with the 2015 world champs and (2016) Olympics coming up," he noted.

Baltimore Sun, in an article, said the Pan Pacific championships is the most significant event for Phelps who is scheduled to swim now and in next summer's world championship set to happen in Russia.

The said meet will also gather together the best swimmers from the United States, Japan, Canada, Australia and South Africa. The Baltimore Sun explained that Phelps is also expected to swim better in Australia where he is set to compete in five individual events like the 100- and 200-meter freestyle, the 100-meter butterfly, the 100-meter backstroke and the 200-meter individual medley.

The report also noted that the swimmer needs to take as much motivation as he needs to have a strong finish.

He, however, noted that his comeback is for his own sake since he pushed himself to work harder.

"Not because my coach wants me to or my mom wants me to or anybody else wants me to. I'm going to have to do it because I want to. That's the reason I'm here, and that's the reason I'm swimming again," Phelps said.

His coach Bob Bowman told Reuters that Phelps wants to prove with his return that he can swim even faster.

"If he didn't think he had the chance to get faster I don't think he would have," Bowman added.
