Four-time IndyCar champion Dario Franchitti as well as 13 other fans were injured when his car went airborne during the Houston Grand Prix on Sunday, October 6, USA Today reported.

Dario Franchitti suffered two broken vertebrae, fractured right ankle and a concussion. The debris from his car resulted in injuring 13 fans as well as an IndyCar Series official, according to the Associated Press.

Franchitti was driven to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center. He had surgery on Sunday to repair his right ankle, Target Ganassi Racing spokesperson Kelby Krauss told USA TODAY Sports.

This accident came just 10 days shy of the second anniversary of the death of Dan Wheldon. Wheldon died when his head struck a post at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway after sailing 325 feet in the air. This caused the cancellation of the race.

Franchitti's car became airborne when he tried to pass Takuma Sato of the course in Turn 5. E.J. Viso was also caught up in the crash. Both Sato and Viso are unharmed.

After the care came to rest, Franchitti could be seen moving. There was a point where he lifted his helmet's visor and seemed to be removing his gloves as well.

The team owner, Chip Ganassi, said that the four-time IndyCar champion was OK. "He's talking. His ankle is a little sore. His back is a little sore. He's going to take a trip to the hospital, but he is OK," Ganassi said.

On Oct. 7, Franchitti also resorted to Twitter to tell his fans how he's doing.

He tweeted: "Thank you to everyone for all the well wishes. They mean a lot to me."

"I would also like to send my best to all the fans involved in the accident and hope that everyone is alright," he added.
