Fans of the classic Tony Hawk Pro Skater video game series will be pleased to learn that a new game is apparently in the works for the franchise, according the man the series is named after.

Legendary skatboarder Hawk recently broke the news on his Demolition Radio show on SiriusXM. "We're working on a game, we are working on a game, it's pretty cool," said Hawk. In addition, the co-host of the show made reference to a motion capture suit, meaning that Hawk will be directly involved in the creation of the currently untitled game.

Publisher of the Tony Hawk games Activision has also confirmed that a new game is in the works, IGN reported.

It is unclear what developer will be in charge of the new project. Robomodo, who developed Tony Hawk Pro Skater HD, which featured remade levels from the first two games in the series, may be in charge of the new Tony Hawk game. However, given the huge resources Activision enjoys, a bigger studio may be called in to handle the game.

This is certainly good news for skateboarding fans as well as fans of one of the most revered extreme sports video game franchises of all time. Beginning back in the PlayStation 1 and Nintendo 64 era, The Tony Hawk Pro Skater franchise has gone through many different changes as new technology and consoles were released. While the Tony Hawk Ride game, with the clunky peripheral controller that attempted to mimic an actual skateboard caused fans to reject it, and lead to believe the series was dead, Tony Hawk Pro Skater HD gave the franchise new life and reignited interest in the classic Tony Hawk gameplay.

Recent skateboarding franchises such as the critically-acclaimed Skate series have focused on realism, but the return of Tony Hawk Pro Skater could cause more interest in arcade-style skateboard games. Considering the entries in the Tony Hawk series that focused on gimmicky controls or open worlds to explore were met with less enthusiasm than the early games in the series, hopefully Activision is able to capture the classic feel of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater games and not get wrapped up in what next-gen consoles can deliver.
