Graphic evidence, witness testimony and a possible motive have all come to light this week in the trial of Marissa DeVault, the Arizona woman accused of brutally killing her husband with a hammer while he was sleeping in January 2009. 

Monday marked the first full day of testimony in the murder case as Gilbert Police Officer Clint Cobbett testified that DeVault was covered in blood when they got to the crime scene. There was also blood all over the bedroom where she's accused of murdering her husband, Dale Harrell, 34.

"Some smeared blood on her hands, on both hands. And it looked like she had the same type of smeared blood on her forehead," he said, according to ABC 15 news.

Cobbett went on to describe how DeVault looked at the scene.

"Did you observe any physical injuries?" Cobbett was asked by DeVault's attorney.

"I did note some reddening, just a slight bit of reddening on her neck," Cobbett said.

Jurors were also shown photos of DeVault's neck to demonstrate the reddening, but it was hard to see, while photos of her hands after the attack displayed her perfectly manicured nails.

After seeing the photos, one of the jurors had a question for Officer Cobbett about DeVault's demeanor during her exam at the hospital.

"She was more calm, a lot more calm," Cobbett replied.

Testimony continued Tuesday morning as firefighters who arrived first at the home took the stand.

The prosecution also began laying the foundation to establish DeVault's motive for killing her husband, reports My Fox Phoenix. Although she claims this was all in self-defense, police say money was involved and prosecutors believe she was looking to collect on her late husband's life insurance policy that detectives say took effect on Jan. 1, 2009, two weeks before the hammer attack.

It was also revealed that the 36-year-old mother owed her secret boyfriend of two years about $300,000 and she needed to pay back her loan.

DeVault faces the death penalty if convicted.
