Dark Souls 2 is one of the few games that will be released exclusively for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 instead of their next-gen successors, and fans of the series are eager to see the new challenges that will be hidden in the game. To help tide fans over until the game's March 2014 release date, Namco Bandai has released a new trailer for the game showing some of the monsters players will have to fight in the game.

The trailer begins with the narrator setting the tone for the game by discussing the dreary and forgotten world of Dark Souls 2. A murky forest is shown during a thunderstorm. As the narrator speaks about a forgotten realm, a figure is seen slowly rising to his feet in the middle of the forest, before the trailer switches to a massive fortress carved into the base of a mountain. Dozens of dragons fly around the castle before the action begins to heat up in the video.

At this point, the game switches from cinematic scenes to actual gameplay footage that shows the protagonist of the game in some of the environments that will be in Dark Souls 2. Most of the areas appear to take place in or around the giant castle, which is populated by various monsters. Some are rather mundane and look like shambling corpses or giant mummies, but others are quite terrifying. The range of different creatures should help Dark Souls 2 stand out as it looks as though developer From Software has created some truly unique, memorable monsters. It is hard to pick out highlights of the monsters seen in the video, but some include a giant monster made from fused together human corpses, a massive demon submerged in lava, and one that appears to be a huge scythe with arms.

When the trailer begins to wrap up, the video switches back to a cinematic scene, showing the protagonist about to dive into a black pool. When the character steps forward he is instantly sucked down into a vortex that appears to have no end before the game's title comes up.

Simply put, if you want a challenging game that will push your skills to the limit, Dark Souls 2 is the game for you. The insane monsters that appear in this trailer should also draw in new fans looking for a game with a unique aesthetic.
