Venezuelan authorities have arrested three people on Monday who have been suspected to be involved in the murder of opposition leader, Luis Manuel Diaz. The shooting incident was the latest in a string of violent attacks on the members of the opposition.

In a report with Reuters, the members of the opposition party continue to blame the ruling Socialists for the death of the candidate for the Democratic Action Party. Venezuelan president, Nicolas Maduro, firmly denies his government's involvement in Diaz's death and has also called for an investigation of the incident.

In a recent report, he insisted that he and his government are 'guarantors of peace.' Maduro suspected that the shooting was the work of rival gangs who were 'settling scores.' He added that opposition leader Luis Diaz's death was manipulated to show the Socialist Party in a bad light.

The report with Reuters said that the Prosecutor General's Office has named three men, between the ages of 22 to 28. The arrests were made on Monday morning in Altagracia de Orituco where Diaz was killed during a rally on Wednesday. Diaz was with Lilian Tintori, wife of jailed opposition leader, Leopoldo Lopez. Tintori has accused the Venezuelan government of inciting state terrorism against their opponents.

Maduro's popularity has suffered greatly during the past few years. Many Venezuelans agree that Maduro does not have the charisma of late president, Hugo Chavez. The country suffers from a great economic crisis, having the world's highest inflation and has also experienced shortages in commodities, including eggs and electronics.

The murder of Diaz has raised the fears of many Venezuelans. The recent string of violent attacks have been rampant and seem to be centered on the members of the opposition. Polls show that odds are in the favor of the opposition, a first in 16 years. Luis Diaz has left a wife and two young sons, a previous report says. Diaz was reportedly gunned down by an armed man who opened fire from a moving car.

The Prosecutor General's Office added that the three men who have been arrested will be accused for their alleged involvement in Diaz's death. The office did not give any further details, CNBC reports.

While the polls seem to be in the favor of the opposition party, many Venezuelans are still loyal to the government as a result of their desire to keep the memory of beloved president, Hugo Chavez, alive. Many fear that the opposition will fully dismantle many state welfare projects.
