"Boruto: Naruto The Movie" was a surprise hit with Naruto fans. The movie raked in a total of USD $5.46 million only three days after it was released in theaters. According to Christian Today, the spin-off movie beat the record set previously by "The Last: Naruto the Movie," which premiered back in 2014.

Even the popular manga's creator, Masashi Kishimoto, was surprised by Boruto's success on the big screen. The anime genius apparently sold his work short, believing that "Boruto: Naruto the Movie" would be taken off theater listings after 10 weeks.

Despite Kishimoto's prediction, however, Boruto is going strong. It is such a big blockbuster that fans are clamoring for a Boruto series. Design Trend believes that the latest Naruto movie has revitalized the franchise and have fans begging for more.

Unfortunately, the one person that can bring Boruto back to life in the small screen does not feel the same way the fans do. In an interview with Anime New Network, Kishimoto reveals that he is not planning to pen another Naruto movie or series in the near future.

Rather, the best-selling manga writer states that he is currently developing another series, which is shaping up to be a science-fiction piece of work.

"I've already finalized the character designs. I think the protagonist is one that hasn't been seen before in manga, and while it's me saying it, I think that the character is done very well," he said in an interview with Anime News Network.

Kishimoto further states that though his new work is still under development, he is hoping that it will be even more successful than Naruto.

Apart from this, the author has also stated that he would like to give himself some time to rest before fully committing to his career once more. At a preview screening of "Boruto: Naruto the Movie" back in July, voice actess Yuko Sanpei told the author that she was looking forward to seeing the films continue. Jokingly, the author was reported to have said "I can't. Please let me rest now."

Moreover, Anime News Network states that in the interview Kishimoto said he would like to focus on his family for the meantime, especially since the last 15 years of his career have been dedicated to the epic ninja saga.

Naruto is widely regarded as one of the most iconic manga series ever made, with a wide storyline that endeared itself to readers around the world. The anime adaptation, though rife with filler arcs, was received warmly by audiences.
