President Obama Signs Up for Health Care Under the Affordable Care Act in 'Symbolic' Gesture

On Monday, President Obama put his critics to rest by finally enrolling in a health-care insurance plan under the Affordable Care Act, his signature overhaul health law.

According to White House officials, the president selected a bronze-tiered insurance plan on the D.C. marketplace as a "symbolic" act to promote the federal health-care insurance exchange program, reports the Washington Post.

Because the president earns a $400,000 yearly salary, he was ineligible for federal subsidies and will pay a monthly premium around $400. His plan will only cover himself, not his wife or their daughters, Sasha and Malia, said officials.

Although the POTUS was involved in selecting a plan, he didn't actually sign up in person. Rather, his staff went to a D.C. exchange office over the weekend on his behalf, the White House official said.

"Like some Americans, the complicated nature of the president's case required an in-person sign-up," the official said. "As you'd expect, the president's personal information is not readily available in the variety of government databases HealthCare.gov uses to verify identities."

The White House official went on to add, "was pleased to participate in a plan as a show of support for these marketplaces which are providing quality, affordable health-care options to more than a million people," reports the Huffington Post.

Republicans have pressured the Commander-in-Chief to sign up for coverage under his own law even though he didn't need to since his health care is covered by the military.

"I'm glad he did it," said Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz Monday. "I'm not going to take a cheap shot at him for signing up. It really wasn't necessary, but if he didn't do it we would all bark at him."

The Utah rep added: "He's the president of the United States. His health care is a little different than the rest of us. We get that."

The deadline for Americans to enroll in the new federal health insurance exchange for health plans that begin on Jan. 1 was extended until Tuesday to give last-minute shoppers extra time.
