When the Division was announced at E3 2013, the game quickly caused plenty to take notice. We'd previously heard the Ubisoft game would feature a mix of turn based and real time combat in a dystopian New York City, allowing players to team up with friends and take out others in a bid to control territory and supplies, and now we have our first taste of what The Division's gameplay will look like.

A new video interview featuring lead game designer Mathias Karlson and design director Axel Rydby reveals more about the world of The Division and how the game will have a variety of survival elements.

Rydby clarified that survival is a key component of The Division, and that foraging for necessities is a major aspect of the game, but not critical to keeping a player alive:

"Not only do you actually have to go out and look for food and water, but [they] become very valuable and rare resources that can be used to trade and stuff like that...But when it comes to having to drink water and eat food to be able to survive, that's not really what we want from it. Food and water will be a very important part of the game, but players will not need to eat and drink to stay alive," said Rydby.

Players will be given a limited amount of supplies to start, but trying to find new supplies is where much of the RPG aspects of the game begin according to Rydby:

"Moving throughout the world, it's going to be a lot about looting and acquiring new gear as you progress. We're focusing a lot on the RPG aspects of the game since we are very much an RPG, so acquiring loot and gearing up your character is going to be a very big part of the game."

Both men refused to confirm if vehicles will be a part of The Division, but did state that limited amounts of fuel in the world will force players to choose between several options for what that fuel will be used for. However, Karlson stated that Ubisoft is still refining the game and figuring out what will work best for players when the game is released:

"The way you navigate and move through the city or a game that is open in nature, it's very core to how you experience the world. We are currently investigating what is the best for our game, what can we do to give you the best experience as a player because that is, in the end, what's most important to us."
