Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog has always been an unlikely pair, but they worked. Sure, they were on-again-off-again in their relationship, and it seems that right now, they're off.

CTV News reported that the stars of the popular "The Muppets" show have called it quits, but due to their commitment to the show that's premiering on ABC soon, they vowed to remain professional around each other.

Miss Piggy and Kermit confirmed their split at the biannual ABC Panel for TV critics last Tuesday.

Kermit said, "People change. So do frogs and pigs. ... We were together for a long, long time and it's personal."

However, he is off the market - Kermit confirmed that he is starting a new relationship with Denise, another pig working in ABC Marketing.

Later, they also released a statement via Twitter about their status. It said "After careful thought, thoughtful consideration and considerable squabbling, we have made the difficult decision to terminate our romantic relationship."

Of course, considering the show's legacy, Variety noted that the big breakup has done well to help promote the new "Muppets" series for ABC.

Bill Prady and Bob Kushell, who are executive producers for the new series for the next generation, said that the ABC show will have a mockumentary feel to it, revolving around the lives of Miss Piggy, Kermit, Fozzie the Bear, and other characters from back stage of "Up Late with Miss Piggy".

The show is also said to incorporate celebrity and musical guests who will make appearances on Miss Piggy's program. Among those already enlisted are Reese Witherspoon and Imagine Dragons.

Prady said about the project, "The goal here is to be exactly the same and completely different. We will honor 'The Muppet Show' (legacy) more rigorously than has been done before but at the same time do something contemporary."

Kushnell added, "Anybody that hasn't seen 'The Muppets' in the past will see this whole new world and it will seem fresh and original and new to them, and anybody that has grown up with that will have that nostalgic feel but also their minds blown by the way we are doing the show."

So what can we expect from the show's revival? Prady shared, "For the first time we will be a little bit behind the mask (of the characters). We might even get a camera into Piggy's house in the morning and catch her before she gets her makeup on."

Now wouldn't that be a sight to see,

"The Muppets" will premiere on September 22 on ABC.
