Miss Piggy on Feminism: Sackler Center First Awardee Shares Op-Ed on Time

In a modern society where females have rights and same sex marriage is legal in some states, you would think that issues like arranged marriages involving pre-adolescent girls, sexism, and rape culture are being addressed better.

But in Hollywood, as with celebrities, even Caitlyn Jenner's debut was still a topic of debate.

Despite the progressive way of thinking, femininity and feminism are subjects that not everyone is willing to embrace. This is probably why even though there are a lot of feminists out there (UN Goodwill Ambassador Emma Watson, for instance) the Sackler Center First Award is presented this year to a Muppet Diva.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the award is given to women who made outstanding contributions in their field, with names like Associate Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day I'Conner, Toni Morrison, and Susan Stroman given the honor in the past.

The Brooklyn Museum chose to give the award to Miss Piggy this year, "for more than forty years of blazing feminist trails with determination and humor, and for her groundbreaking role inspiring generations the world over."

While it may seem ridiculous to many how a fictional character could be given such an honor, Miss Piggy wrote an Op-Ed (with her remarks provided by The Muppets Studio) on Time Magazine as to why she deserved the accolade, which was presented to her by Elizabeth A. Sackler and Kermit the Frog on June 4.

She said, "I believe that any woman who refuses to accept society's preconceived notions of who or what they can be is a feminist. I believe any woman who is willing to struggle, strive - and if necessary learn karate - to make their mark in the world is a feminist. And, yes, I believe that any woman, who cares about her appearance, her star billing and most especially her percentage of the gross, is a feminist.

"Moi is all of these things."

She did not stop there. In fact, in her Op-Ed, Miss Piggy deigned to make fans and critics think: "What is the future of feminism? The answer is obvious - feminism's future must be proud, positive, powerful, perseverant, and, wherever possible, alliterative. It must believe in itself, share its triumphs, overcome its setbacks and inspire future generations."

She may be a Muppet, but you have to agree that the overbearing Diva is one to inspire, considering that she's not just some stuffed animal, but an international celebrity, fashion icon, and a best-selling author as well. We should not limit our perception of her because she's not human. As she noted, labeling her as a "pig" is "a vestige of latent "species-ism... Let us not besmirch an entire species because of the sins of a few."
