The head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, learned the trick of spinning a basketball from the exhibition basketball team Harlem Globetrotters on Tuesday during the pontiff's weekly general audience in Vatican City.

NBC News said Pope Francis became an honorary member of the team who gave him a framed No. 90 jersey with the name "Pope Francis" in commemoration of the Globetrotters' 90-year founding anniversary. The team was reportedly in Italy for a tour and was given the chance to show off their skills in front of fans at St. Peter's Square and to also meet the Pope.

A video of the event showed members of the team Hi-Lite Bruton, Ant Atkinson, Big Easy Lofton and Flight Time Lang teaching the pontiff how to spin a ball using his index finger. The Pope seemed amused with the trick and he tried it for the second time amid a cheering audience who were amused with the act.

According to Yahoo Sports, this is the eighth time the team was able to have an audience with a pope as they previously visited other pontiffs in the years 1951, 1952, 1959, 1963, 1968, 1986 and 2000. The Catholic Church leader is also said to be the ninth honorary member of the club which included former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, comedian Bob Hope, NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, comedian Whoopi Goldberg, South African activist and president Nelson Mandela, Olympic gold medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee, civil rights activist Jesse Jackson and Pope John Paul II whom the team visited in 2000.

"This is only the 9th time in 90 years that we've had an honorary member. He knew who they were. He was laughing with the guys. He was very talkative," a team representative said in a TMZ report.

Globetrotters president Kurt Schneider also said in a statement that they feel honored to be given the opportunity to meet the Pope and give him the commemorative jersey.

"We are very humbled by the opportunity to bestow this honor upon Pope Francis. His tireless work for the well-being of the poor and elderly, his humanitarian efforts and his commitment to bridge gaps between people of various cultures are ways the Harlem Globetrotters also aspire to touch lives around the world. He embodies the Globetrotters' efforts to provide service, smiles and sportsmanship globally," Schneider was quoted by the Washington Post as saying.

The honorary tag is reportedly given to "an individual of extraordinary character and achievement who has made an everlasting mark on the world," as per Yahoo Sports.

Their website reveals that the Harlem Globetrotters continue to entertain the world with their "famous tradition of ball handling wizardry, basketball artistry, and one-of-a-kind family entertainment that continues to thrill fans of all ages." They will reportedly have about 320 games scheduled in North America for their 90th anniversary tour.
