From "Sherlock" to "The Hobbit" to "The Office," it seems that British actor Martin Freeman is set to prove that he has the acting chops to give to the world, no matter which genre it is. According to Entertainment Weekly, the 50-year-old actor is joining the cast of "Captain America: Civil War" in a yet to be disclosed role.

A statement from Marvel's president Kevin Feige read, "From his roles as Bilbo Baggins and Doctor Watson to Tim in The Office, Martin's range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us. We couldn't be more honored or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe."

Sure, it will be great to see Sherlock's sidekick in the MCU, but since his role has not been confirmed yet, speculations from fans put his character as an anti-hero politician or The Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson. However, there is another speculation that just might work:

Could Martin Freeman be the older version of Peter Parker?

That's a possibility considering that in the "Civil War" comic, an older version of the web-slinger appears --- definitely not a high school or college student, but not much older, either. However, MCU is not really concerned about accuracy, as noted by Movie Pilot, and while Peter can be in his thirties during the war, can Freeman really pull a character that is much younger than his actual age?

While it is possible that Marvel is going for an older version of Spiderman, we must remember that for the most part, they were said to be looking for a younger actor for the 2017 film, and to fit both younger and older versions may mean that an origins story may be around at some point, and Marvel has been adamant about avoiding that, considering that there have been two Spiderman Origin films in the last decade.

Cinema Blend, however, noted that Freeman might land a political role. He might play Henry Peter Gyrich, the "government liason who interacts with the Avengers", assuming that he will be cast in a supporting role. His character might be similar to what Tommy Lee Jones or Robert Redford portrayed in previous Marvel films, Cinema Blend added.

He could be Norman Osborn, too, with a bigger role for the 2017 version of the web-slinger set in place.

What do you think? Which role is perfect for the versatile actor?
