After being cut by the St. Louis Rams during the preseason, first openly gay player Michael Sam now has something to celebrate after it has been announced that he is already engaged to his longtime boyfriend.

The engagement reportedly happened during a late-December vacation in Europe of the 25-year-old football player and boyfriend Vito Cammisano who, according to People, were seen kissing during the NFL draft last year.

A source of People confirmed the engagement of the couple, who posted images of their travel in Spain and Italy on their social media accounts. On his Twitter account, Sam shared a photo of him and Cammisano with the Coliseum in Rome as their background. He also shared a birthday photo in Vatican City with the caption "What a beautiful view from the top of St. Peter's Basilica!!! Happy 25th birthday to me #vatican #Italy #birthday"

Sam also thanked all his friends and those who sent him birthday wishes.

A similar Sports World News report noted that during Sam's vacation, one of them (though it is still not clear who exactly) popped the question, with one of Cammisano's friend confirming the engagement and congratulating the couple for this life event.

Instagram user stephrovig posted a photo with Cammisano and captioned it "People, he is officially off the market. My beautiful friend @vitcamm is getting married. I love you so much Vit. So damn excited... so ready to celebrate @mikeysam52 #vitoisengaged."

It was added by Sports World News that the two are "extremely happy" together as Sam discussed his relationship with his then boyfriend in "glowing terms."

US Magazine said that they fell in love two years later after seeing each other again following their initial encounter.

"Everyone knew Vito was gay, so we couldn't even be seen together. There was a lot of climbing out of windows. Vito was really the person who showed me I had to do it. I wanted us to be comfortable," he was quoted by US Magazine as saying.

According to People, the couple were students at the University of Missouri where Sam also fluorished as a defensive player of the football team before he got drafted last May by the Rams, but was cut from the team lineup during the preseason.

He was later on signed by the Dallas Cowboys where he played for the team shortly then released last October.

"While this is disappointing, I will take the lessons I learned here in Dallas and continue to fight for an opportunity to prove that I can play every Sunday," Sam posted on his Twitter account.

The public will truly anticipate the couple's upcoming wedding and will also look forward to what will happen to Sam's professional football career.
