It looks like karma can do everything.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella was recently interviewed by Harvey Mudd President Maria Klawe at the Grace Hopper Conference. As the conversation drew to a close, Nadella was asked to give an advice to women who are uncomfortable about asking pay raises.

The female workforce, hoping for inspirational words, was told to stay where they are.

"It's not really about asking for the raise, but knowing and having faith that the system will actually give you the right raises as you go along," Nadella responded. His statement indicated that women should rely on their fate.

He added that not asking for wage increase is "One of the additional superpowers that, quite frankly, women who don't ask for a raise have. Because that's good karma. It'll come back because somebody's going to know that's the kind of person that I want to trust. That's the kind of person that I want to really give more responsibility to. And in the long-term efficiency, things catch up."

According to TechCrunch, Klawe's question rose from her recent attendance in the "Most Powerful Women Summit." In the said convention, she noted that approximately 25% to 33% of the audience never requested their salaries be increased.

Apparently, Klawe is also a member of Microsoft's Board of Directors. Mashable noted her seemingly disagreeing response to Nadella's answer. She advised women instead, "Do your homework. Don't be stupid like I was."

Upon realizing his "error," Nadella striked on Twitter posting, "Was inarticulate re how women should ask for raise. Our industry must close gender pay gap so a raise is not needed because of a bias #GHC14."

Some users were disturbed by the CEO's comments.

A Twitter user wrote, "Truly horrified that Satya Nadella could tell women at Grace Hopper not to ask for raises."

"Microsoft CEO finally produces something worse than his operating system--career advice for women," another tweeted.

Another felt annoyed, "Guys like Nadella with such mindsets irks me. Unfortunately that's how most people are."

The Microsoft CEO elaborated in a memo that he answered Klawe's question completely wrong. He expressed supporting programs at Microsoft and in the industry at large, where more women are brought. Then came his retraction, saying that men and women should get paid equally for equal work.

Nadella eventually supported Klawe's advice on seeking pay raises, calling it the "right" one. He went on, "If you think you deserve a raise, you should just ask." His statement finished with a moral flourish, indicating that he has learned a valuable lesson.
