In a shocking turn or events, Philippine basketball team, Gilas Philippines, lost to Qatar during the opening quarterfinal match. Following the surprising defeat, Gilas entered a do-or-die situation against South Korea.

With a game that started strong for the Philippines, the game ended with a triumphant South Korea, 97-95.

"The entire responsibility falls on my shoulders. I want to apologize to our people," quoted Patricia Hizon of Gilas Philippines coach, Chot Reyes, via Twitter.

Over Twitter and live-streaming, updates were being shared about the game as it happened. In the first quarter, the Philippines scored 22 points with Korea trailing with 18. They continued to lead throughout the second quarter with Jimmy Alapag paving the way and racking in a solid 15 points. Jeff Chan contributed as well, putting up 13 points of his own. During halftime, the score was Gilas Philippines 51, South Korea 44.

The third quarter was an entirely different scene, with South Korea having a run of their own and ending the quarter with a one point lead at 72-71. South Korea continued to go neck and neck proving a much more difficult adversary in the final quarter and by the middle mark of the final leg, they tied the score at 82. Korea then took the lead at the 5:33 mark with 84-82.

In the end, South Korea didn't let up and defeated the Philippines by two, effectively ending Gilas' run at the championship.

According to SmartGilasPhilippines.com, the highest three scorers for the Philippines were Jimmy Alapag with 25 points and 4 assists, LA Tenorio with 20 and Jeff Chan contributed his own 16 points, 13 of which were during the first half.

The Gilas team was unable to repeat its successful bid against South Korea during the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship. Playing at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Gilas Pilipinas beat South Korea a year ago by seven that allowed the Philippine team to secure a slot during this year's FIBA World Cup.

Both South Korea and the Philippines participated in the 2014 World Basketball Championship or the FIBA World Cup of Basketball that took place in Spain. The Philippines ended with a 1-4 record, while South Korea failed to bring home a single win against the world's highest ranked basketball teams.

The Philippines was put in the must-win situation after the loss to Middle East team Qatar with the final score recorded at a heartbreaking 68-77 against the Philippines.
