While the VMA's should be strictly about the music, it seldom ever is. In this year's list of wild on-stage antics, none comes close too topping Nicki Minaj and an apparent 'wardrobe malfunction.' Minaj could be seen throughout her performance with Ariana Grande holding the top of her dress together. This wasn't merely pulling up an article of clothing every time it came loose; Minaj was literally holding the upper part of her dress together. At any moment, a lapse in her firm grasp could have left America with their jaws strolling to the floor.

Initially Minaj blamed the quick changeover time for her "unzipped" dress.

"You all know I had a wardrobe malfunction," Minaj screamed at reporters after arriving at the Republic Records After-party late on Sunday.

Immediately critics met the poor excuse with fire, citing that how long could it really take just to zip up a dress? The wardrobe malfunction was noted to be completely staged, which in some ways lessens the ferocity of the whole performance.

Minaj isn't necessarily a Whitney Houston or a Mary J. Blige, but what these music divas did was let their music speak for itself. There were no staged malfunctions or illicit dance numbers. There was a microphone and a voice. That was all that was necessary to leave the audience in a standing ovation.

An insider reported to the NY Daily News that the wardrobe issues weren't necessarily a malfunction because Minaj already knew it was going to happen. "During the dress rehearsal she did the number numerous times and could not make it into the dress zipped up even once," the insider said. "I've no idea why she didn't just decide to wear something else. She just didn't have the time to change from one outfit into another, there was no way."

Whether it was intentional or not, Minaj succeeded in becoming this year's Miley Cyrus. Cyrus infamously stole the show last year with her wild twerk number on Robin Thicke. Shock value is becoming the latest trench in show business. Performers have to top each other in order to grab the public's attention.
