Report: iWatch Delayed Until 2015

It looks like Apple's release-slate for Fall 2014 just got a little less crowded. Apparently the iWatch will not be joining the fall lineup that already includes the iPhone 6, iPad Air 2, iOS 8 and MacOSX Yosemite. The latest reports indicate that issues with mass production of Apple's first smart watch have likely pushed its release to some point in 2015.

BGR reports that insiders claim iWatch units will only begin full assembly next month and will be produced thereafter at a rate of 1 million units per month, which wouldn't be enough to fill Apple's end of the year quota. Its also likely that they're being overly cautious as they don't want to mar the launch of the iWatch by not having enough units to move during this holiday season.

Apparently hardware manufacturers would also require about two months in between when the components begin their assembly and are actually ready to ship. BGR reports that Apple's target number of deliverables for the iWatch is 10 million units by the end of the year, so do the math: if production starts in September and requires two months to ship its first million, they would have between 1 to 2 million units tops by Christmas. That's not going to cut it. Not for the most popular mobile manufacturer in the world, who's known for their draconian-level of control over their products.

If these latest reports are true, the iWatch wouldn't be expected to launch until early 2015 at, well, the earliest. They could do a limited release, but that seems like it could backfire during the holiday season. In all honesty, it's probably better that Apple waits until they can release the iWatch on their own terms. With Google's Android Wear smart watches poised to be a real player the early 'wearables' market, Apple can't afford to fumble this launch and fall behind in what is expected to be the next-big-thing in mobile technology.
