New York Mets rookie Jacob deGrom was not able to join their starting game on Tuesday against the Washington Nationals at Citi Field because of a shoulder injury.

The 26-year-old right-hander, according to ESPN, was diagnosed by team doctors with a sore shoulder but the player expressed that he does not believe that his condition is "concerning."

"I'm calm about it. I don't think it's anything serious. I can probably go out there and pitch with it right now, but I think just talking to them, at this time of the year, it's not really worth pushing it. If I can skip one [start] and be 100 percent and let it calm down, I think that's what they kind of talked about," DeGrom told ESPN.

The player reportedly felt soreness on his top shoulder last Friday after their game against the Nationals in Washington.

"I just felt a little something after the last start and gave them a heads up. So they said let's just try to skip one and go from there. I haven't felt anything all year. I think it's a little inflamed or something. I think I'll be fine," DeGrom added.

The team's assistant general manager John Ricco told ESPN that it is still unclear when DeGrom can return to the games noting that he will likely miss one or more games due to a pending examination on Monday in New York.

Ricco noted that if the player will be placed in the disabled list, the team would have to turn to Noah Syndergaard or Rafael Montero from Triple-A Las Vegas.

"I think actually this may be, hopefully, a case where if we end up skipping a start, that just helps us with that. We were talking about doing that anyway. That may end up being the result of this where he misses a start and start managing workload," Ricco added.

For his part, Mets manager Terry Collins has already expressed his worry about DeGrom's muscle soreness.

"There's two sides. He's not concerned about it, the trainers aren't. I'm not overly concerned except he's a young kid whose got a sore shoulder. That scares me," Collins told Vavel.

The same report noted that whatever the results will be in Monday's checkup, fans will be looking forward to how the team will cope especially that they also had to deal with the same situation last year when they lost ace pitcher Matt Harvey to an injury.

DeGrom, according to ESPN, has a 6-5 record with a 2.87 ERA in the 16 major league starts this season. The player said that he has also experienced shoulder soreness last season.

"Last year it was in a different spot. I haven't had this. Talking to the guys, they don't think it's anything serious," he added.
