David Wilson, who plays running back for the New York Giants, is said to be retiring at the early age of 23, as doctors claim that his body cannot handle the physical requirement of the sport anymore.

Wilson was advised by a team doctors to give up playing football as it would be "in his best interest," the New York Times reported.

On his Instagram account, Wilson seemed to have accepted the fact that he needs to say goodbye to the game he has been dreaming to be part of since he was a child.

"At age 8 I told my #Dad I wanted to play football in THE NFL at this point in my life I have done that. Even Blessed to be drafted in the 1st round. Broke and set RECORDS, scored Touchdowns, and all that follows. It's a great feeling to live a out dream. Unfortunately that has been paused but I am blessed that I am able to walk away from this game healthy and still able to be me with no restrictions pain or struggle and So all I ask is please don't be sorry or pity ME that's just one chapter life goes on and I'm glad I can live it. Once a Giant always a #Giant #pocketrocket," Wilson posted on his Instagram.

According to CBS Sports, Wilson asked his fans and supporters not to feel sorry for him or pity him.

"I lived my dream. A lot of people only get to dream their dream. I lived that dream. Now I have a chance to dream another dream and live that, too," Wilson said in a statement released by the Giants.

It was added by the New York Times that the Giants considered Wilson's status as a "big blow" to the team. The team hoped that he could recover from his surgery.

But last July 29, the player experienced numbness of his arms and legs when he got hit on the neck during a practice. According to the New York Times, it was the same feeling that Wilson experienced late last year before he was diagnosed with spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the space inside the spinal bones.

CBS Sports added that Wilson underwent a spinal fusion surgery last January and had since been placed in rehab prior to his return to training camp in July.
