Rodrigo Vallejo, the son of ex-Michoacan Governor Fausto Vallejo, has been charged with withholding evidence in a case directly tied to the Knights Templar cartel after a video surfaced last week showing Vallejo meeting with Servando 'La Tuta' Gomez, the leader of the organized crime group.

Vallejo is now being accused of taking part in a cover-up after failing to answer questions by investigators with the federal attorney general's office, the government said in a statement.

The investigation and charges come on the heels of a video surfacing in which Vallejo was shown casually meeting with Servando Gomez, beer in hand, in Michoacan, an area run by the Knights Templar Cartel, for which Gomez serves as the leader.

On the video, Vallejo can be seen chatting with La Tuta about Mexican politics. The subtitled video has clear audio, on which the son of Fausto Vallejo can be heard telling La Tuta that his father had undergone an organ transplant.

Vallejo also speaks of plans to create a group called "la empresa" to work with the Knights Templar.

When questioned about the video, the former Governor claimed that his son was "set up," and had been forced to meet with leaders of organized crime: "This does not necessarily indicate that they are criminals.".

Rodrigo Vallejo now claims publicly that he was threatened, and had been "forced to meet with Servando Gomez."

The charges brought upon Fausto Vallejo's son threatens to damage the reputation of the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party of President Enrique Pena Nieto in terms of the fight against organized crime in Mexico.

The PRI has made deemphasizing drug violence a large part of their platform, hoping instead to focus on economic reforms for the struggling nation, and the leaked video -- which immediately prompted calls for an investigation by authorities -- threatens to damage that reputation for a hard stance against cartel strongholds in Mexico.

According to reports, Vallejo's father, Fausto Vallejo, was elected governor in 2011 amid accusations that the PRI had colluded with organized crime to steal a narrow victory. The leaked video stands to give credibility to those accusations against the ruling party.

Vallejo resigned in June citing failing health.
