South Texas Police Chase Caught on Tape Shows Dangers of Undocumented Immigrant Journey

Video footage released by Breitbart of a south Texas police chase involving a van full of undocumented immigrants is just the latest evidence of the dangerous journey immigrants must make in order to live within American borders.

The video, shot by Breitbart Texas, shows police in Brooks County, a few miles from the border checkpoint in Falfurrias, pulling over a white cargo van full of undocumented immigrants. The van appears to heed to the sirens, but gives chase at the last minute, braking wildly and nearly running through a fence.

It stops short of the fence, and a number of passengers pour out and into the dense Texas brush.

About five of the 20 passengers were caught, including a man from Honduras and two women and a young male child from El Salvador.

When interviewed, one of the women indicated that "they were told it would be a 15 to 30 minute hike around the checkpoint to the rendezvous point where they would again be picked up by smugglers and taken on their journey to Houston," according to Breitbart.

The reality of that journey is much, much different. The hike through the terrain in the area is over soft sand, and with temperatures well into the 90s, that "15 to 30 minute hike" would have taken about two to three days, if they'd made it at all.

With no food or water, surviving being dumped in that area would have been questionable at best. According to Breitbart, the woman "became noticeably upset when she was advised as to what she and her child would have faced if they had not been captured."

Smugglers are notorious for leaving stragglers behind on the arduous journeys through south Texas. The injured or ill who cannot keep up are left to die alone in the desert, as the rest of the group moves on toward freedom.

In the last month alone, 12 bodies of undocumented immigrants have been found in Brooks County, according to Breitbart. Officials estimate they find about one out of 10 bodies. Hundreds of illegal aliens are dumped every night into the private property of ranchers living in this area.

The passengers were also interviewed about the amount paid to smugglers, which one man stated was about $2,000.
