In what Mexican authorities are calling a "mistake," a helicopter crossed border lines in Arizona Thursday morning and shot at U.S. Border Patrol agents.

During the early hours on Thursday morning just west of San Miguel Gate in Arizona, Border Patrol agents were met with a terrifying surprise: a Mexican military helicopter had crossed border lines and was shooting at them.

According to Andy Adame, U.S. Border Patrol Spokesperson, two shots were fired at the Border Patrol agents, and no damage or injuries were documented.

A statement was made by U.S. Border Patrol officials in Tuscon, saying that "a Mexican law enforcement helicopter crossed approximately 100 yards north into Arizona nearly eight miles southwest of the Village of San Miguel," and that the "incident is currently under investigation."

Mexico officials also weighed in on the incident, calling the shooting a "mistake," and saying that the aircraft involved was an Army helicopter. They declined to elaborate further.

While Mexico may be sure that the incident was a mistake, authorities on the U.S. side of the border aren't so sure.

In an interview with Fox News, Border Patrol agent and Union Vice President Shawn Moran said, "The Border Patrol vehicle was clearly marked and it's very hard to mistake those vehicles for anything else."

Moran also stated during the interview that while American agents take care to stay within border lines, the same cannot be said for Mexican agents, who have at times crossed into U.S. territory.

"Unfortunately on the other side of the coin, we really have no repercussions when the Mexican military or law enforcement crosses into the U.S.," Moran said.

"We usually let them go with an apology at the orders of the State Department."

A Border Patrol representative made the following statement to Time in regards to the incident:

"At approximately 5:45 a.m. Thursday morning, a Mexican law enforcement helicopter crossed approximately 100 yards north into Arizona nearly 8 miles southwest of the Village of San Miguel on the Tohono O'odham Indian Nation while on a law enforcement operation near the border," Peter B. Bidegain III, a spokesman for the United States Border Patrol, said in an email.

"Two shots were fired from the helicopter but no injuries or damage to U.S. property were reported. The incident is currently under investigation."
