Rumor has it that the actor has been shortlisted to play the titular role in an upcoming "Doctor Strange" movie.

Deadline reports that Marvel is looking to cast either Benedict Cumberbatch or Tom Hardy as Doctor Strange, a character which has existed since the early 1960's. "Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created the character in 1963 as a neurosurgeon who serves as the Sorcerer Supreme, protecting Earth against magical and mystical threats with powers of sorcery, mysticism, and martial arts," adds the outlet.

Some outlets seem to be rooting for Cumberbatch including MoviePilot which writes that the actor "has the build, the voice, and the gravitas to pull off a role that runs the risk of turning completely cheesy and unbelievable without an actor with considerable skill in the role."

But even with Cumberbatch fans excited at the possibility of having the "Sherlock" actor clad in spandex costume for the role, not everyone seems to be happy about the casting rumor.  A quick run-through in the comments section of Deadline's report reveals several readers who would rather cast another actor for the role.

"No Cumberbatch. He is overrated, and not a good character choice. I prefer someone new, unknown, but who can act. A good script will easily outperform expectations, not the actor," reads a comment by mentallect.

Another user opines that Cumberbatch looks nowhere near Stephen Strange. "You put a beard on Cumberbatch (I shudder at the image in my mind) and he just looks like Cumberbatch with a beard," writes TheForecast.

Apart from the alleged role mismatch, the actor also seems to be quite busy with other projects. Even Steven Moffat, showrunner of BBC's "Sherlock" is reportedly having trouble trying to pin him down. "It can be quite annoying too if you're scheduling a damn show," Moffat said of the actor's shot to fame.

But the fourth season of "Sherlock" which has been rumored to be facing a delay according to Latin Post, is not the only project he has up his sleeve. The actor is also set to play the role of Johnny Depp's brother in the movie "Back Mass." The two will be playing the Bulger brothers in the Scott Cooper-film.

MoviePilot also notes that Cumberbatch dropped out of Guillermo del Toro's "Crimson Peak" due to scheduling constraints. With projects coming in left and right, will the actor still be able to make time for the upcoming Marvel film? Or will the doctor-sorcerer be played by Tom Hardy instead?

"Doctor Strange" has no set reease date yet but Deadine reports that Scott Derrickson will be directing the film with Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer in charge of script.
