A Florida father is accused of suffocating his 1-year-old son in order to have more time to play Xbox video games.

Investigators say that the suspect, 24-year-old Cody Wygant, was allegedly frustrated that his 16-month-old son, Daymeon, was crying and preventing him from playing video games on Thursday around 1 a.m. Wygant told officials that because the toddler was crying uncontrollably, he covered his nose and mouth for three to four minutes until the boy appeared exhausted and lethargic. He then placed him in a playpen and covered him with multiple layers of bed sheets.

The father went on to play video games and watch TV for about five hours before finally checking on his son, who was by then unconscious. The baby, who was not breathing when emergency crews arrived at the home, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

According to the Associated Press, Wygant was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and child neglect with great bodily harm, said Citrus County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Heather Yates.

"It is inconceivable that a father could kill his infant son - it just baffles the mind," said Citrus County Sheriff Jeff Dawsy in a statement.

Yates added that Wygant was jobless and recently moved to Florida from California, where he has an extensive criminal background in California that ranges from trespassing to rape.

The Toronto Sun reports that a judge set Wygant's bond to $100,000 on Friday.

His other child, an infant baby girl, was placed in the Department of Children and Families' custody.
