Detroit Tigers Might Consider Signing Stephen Drew to Fix Shortstop Woes

The Detroit Tigers are still looking at the possibility of bringing in veteran free agent Stephen Drew, as instability at shortstop position is starting to become a problem for the American League Central team, as Brad Faber of RantSports.com notes.

Drew, who surprisingly remains unsigned at this point of the season, could be an option for the Tigers to fill the void left by starting shortstop Jose Iglesias, who will likely miss the entire season due to a shin injury. The Tigers acquired Alex Gonzalez and Andrew Romine to offset Iglesias' absence, but both have been inconsistent on the field or at the plate.

According to Faber, with the Tigers needing help at the shortstop position, the 31-year-old Drew might be the best solution to their problem.

"The Tigers obviously hoped that the duo [Gonzalez and Romine] would be able to hold down the fort until Iglesias returns, but after witnessing the shortcomings of these two players, the Tigers would now be very wise to consider bringing in someone they know could stabilize the position such as Drew," Faber stated.

Gonzalez, who was acquired by the Tigers in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles, made a smashing debut with his new team after scoring a homer in the season opener. However, his play declined in the succeeding games and he's now hitting just .238 at the plate. Another concern: Gonzalez never averaged higher than .250 in a full season since 2010.

Drew, for his part, is batting .264 with 90 homers and 416 RBIs in his career, hitting .253 with 13 homers and 67 RBIs for the Boston Red Sox last season. Analysts believe Drew could provide the Tigers with another left-handed batter, an area the team desperately needs help with right now. In addition, Drew could be a major game-changer in the postseason, given his experience with the defending World Series champions the Boston Red Sox.

General manager Dave Dombrowski expressed interest in acquiring Drew before the start of the season, and it won't be shocking if the Tigers revive their talks with the shortstop's agent in their attempt to find another piece to their championship puzzle.
