The Oakland Raiders have emerged as the top destination for Pro Bowl and All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis, who was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Wednesday.

Looking to add more valuable pieces after missing the playoffs once again, the Raiders are seemingly leaning toward pulling off a big offseason coup that would help them acquire one of the best cornerbacks in the game today.

Revis, a former three-time All Pro and five-time Pro Bowler, had a solid year despite coming off an ACL injury: he amassed 50 tackles along with two interceptions in 16 games. However, while he had above-average stats, the Bucs were forced to unload some big contracts in an attempt to address other holes in their lineup, such as the defensive line and quarterback positions. Unfortunately for Revis, his contract has to come off the books.

Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht confirmed Revis' release after issuing an official statement on Wednesday.

"We would like to thank Darrelle for his time and effort with our organization last year," Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht said in a statement via ESPN. "Darrelle showed a lot of heart last year as he worked extremely hard to get himself back on the field following his knee injury sustained the previous season.

"We have specific ideas regarding the best way to build this defense and, while you never like to lose a good player, we believe this is in the best interests of our team moving forward. Darrelle was a true professional here in Tampa Bay and we wish him continued success in his career."

Raiders Charging for Revis

According to initial reports, the Raiders are very interested in signing Revis, who once was dubbed the finest cornerback in the game. Even before Revis' release, the Raiders had expressed their desire to arrange a trade for the cornerback, though no transaction prospered heading into the Wednesday 4 p.m. deadline.

Oakland's Got Company

Aside from the Raiders, the Cleveland Browns are also being named as another potential landing spot for Revis. However, NFL insider Adam Schefter believes the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles should be the teams to be closely watched because of their ability to negotiate huge offseason deals.

"Two teams to watch on CB Darrelle Revis once Tampa releases him: Philadelphia and New England (Jets fans shudder)," Schefter posted on his Twiiter page.
