This weekend M. Night Shyamalan's new film "After Earth" will hit theaters.

The film, starring Jaden Smith and Will Smith, follows Kitai Raige and his father Cypher after a crash landing leaves them stranded on Earth, 1,000 years after events forced humanity's escape. With Cypher injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help.

The film marks the return of Shyamalan to the director's seat after a three-year absence. The film will premiere on May 30 and has scored terrible reviews. The Hollywood Reporter wrote, "The disappointing sci-fi survival tale does little with its substantial resources."

Meanwhile Rope of silicon gave the film an F and stated, "After Earth is an embarrassment. If anything I guess it gave us another solid score from James Newton Howard, but I would prefer to just forget this film ever happened and go on with my life."

The Daily News gave the movie 0 stars out of 4 and added "Will Smith and son Jaden Smith are launched together into screen orbit, but M. Night Shyamalan's space film is a crashing bore."

The Portland Press Herald was also derisive and stated "Father-son Smith vehicle has fair digitized beasts and not much else." They added "Truth be told, 'After Earth' wouldn't exist had Will Smith not cooked it up as yet another star vehicle for his son, Jaden. But since buying your kid a movie credit is a tradition that dates back to the beginnings of Hollywood, you can't hold that against it."

Shyamalan last directed "The Last Airbender," "The Lady In the Water" and "The Happening." All three films were plagued by bad reviews. The director's breakout came in 2000 when he helmed "The Sixth Sense" which was nominated for an Academy Award.

Columbia Pictures will distribute "After Earth" nationwide. The movie is rated PG-13 for sci-fi action violence and some disturbing images
