Mark down another win for the PlayStation 4. Sony's next-gen console continues to best the XBox One; the PS4 sold more units than Microsoft's newest console during the month of January, according to a report from The NPD Group.

"PS4 led overall hardware sales this month, followed by the Xbox One," said Liam Callahan from the NPD Group, IGN reported.

Sony Computer Entertainment America Marketing Vice President John Koller confirmed the sales news in a PlayStation Blog post. "In the U.S., PS4 was #1 in sales for next-gen consoles in January, nearly doubling the nearest next-gen competitor," Koller wrote on the PlayStation blog.

Despite coming in second again, January wasn't all gloom and doom for the Xbox One. The newest Microsoft consoles "have sold at a rate of 2.29 times faster than Xbox 360 in the U.S. in the same time frame for the first three months on the market," Microsoft said in a statement, according to IGN. In addition, Microsoft claims that 2.27 million games were sold on the Xbox One and Xbox 360 during this time frame.

Nintendo even had some good news to report for Janaury. Software sales for the Wii U have increased 16 percent in comparison to January 2013. Super Mario 3D World also continues to sell big, with the critically-acclaimed game selling 655,000 units overall.

The NPD Group reports that Call Of Duty: Ghosts was the best-selling game of January 2014, with NBA 2K14, Battlefield 4, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Grand Theft Auto V, Madden NFL 25, Minecraft, FIFA 14, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, and Tomb Raider 2013 rounding out the top 10. Total software sales for the month were at $224 million, and total hardware sales were at $241 million.

Despite the strong software numbers, sales of video games were actually down in comparison to January 2013. This is likely due to far less video games being released in January 2014 as developers transition to the next-gen consoles and stop production on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 games.
