In a recent meeting behind closed doors, Sony discusssed the continued success of its popular PlayStation 4 console, and how engaged the current audience is with the machine's features.

In the so-called "State of the Platform" meeting, Sony revealed that the console is continuing to sell well and that the company "has increased its market share" with "heavy gamers."

"PS4's are generally sold out at all retailers although regular supply is refreshing the channel," Sony said in a statement, IGN reported.

The top three best-selling games found on the young console were revealed to be Call of Duty: Ghosts, FIFA 14, and Battlefield 4. Given the immense popularity of these franchises, it is no surprise that their next-gen entries are topping the sales chart.

PlayStation's Vice President of Marketing John Koller stated that the PlayStation 4 has sold 4.2 million units since being launched on Nov. 15 2013. "[This console] hasn't been like prior ones... this is a story of engagement," said Koller. "When demand outstrips supply, the promise of what's to come is really critical," he added.

Koller backed up his statements by revealing that PlayStation 4 users average 34 million hours a week playing games on the console. That is a little over eight hours per week playing video games for each and every PlayStation 4 user. Factoring media apps such as Netflix and Hulu Plus into the mix brings the total collective average of hours using the system to 50 million.

PlayStation 4 owners have also been revealed to more likely be connected to the Internet than PlayStation 3 owners. While it took three years after launch for the PlayStation 3 userbase to reach 70 percent of users on the Internet, currently 90 percent of PlayStation 4 owners are connected to the Internet on average.

While exact statistics for digital sales were not mentioned, Sony stated that retail PlayStation network cards sales increase 120 percent year-over-year and PlayStation Plus subscriptions have increased 90 percent since the system launched.

These figures seem to indicate that the PlayStation 4 is on track to be a success, but in these early stages of a console's life Sony may lose their number one spot quickly.
