Pride and prejudice consumed the posh inhabitants of "Downton Abbey" in the latest episode. 

In the latest installment, Lady Rose (Lily James) tells Mrs. Hughes (Phyllis Logan) to keep the secret that a jazz band will be the big surprise for Lord Grantham's (Hugh Bonneville) birthday.

Alfred (Matt Milne) then gets a surprise himself: a letter from the Ritz saying a student who was accepted has dropped out of the cooking program, and he is the next in line. He therefore says goodbye to Downton, leaving Daisy (Sophie McShera) with nothing but heartbreak.

Moseley (Kevin Doyle) attempts to come back to Downton to take Alfred's place, but Carson (Jim Carter) refuses to take him back because Moseley previously scoffed at taking a lowly footman position. Later, Mrs. Hughes presses the matter, and ultimately convinces Carson to take Moseley back. 

Anna (Joanne Froggatt) and Bates (Brendan Coyle) try to move on after Anna's horrific incident, with Bates reassuring Anna that nothing will stop him from loving her. The decide to have a romantic night out together in an attempt to forget about their troubles.

When they get to the hotel, the uppity waiter refuses to seat them because they are not members of the Yorkshire upper crust. Luckily, Cora Crawley (Elizabeth McGovern) is dining at the restaurant as well, and convinces the waiter to seat them.

Meanwhile, Isobel Crawley (Penelope Wilton) finds Violet's (Maggie Smith) beloved letter opener stuffed in a seat cushion, proving that young Peg did not steal it.

Later, before dinner at Downton, Edith (Laura Carmichael) receives a letter from a London doctor that says she's pregnant.

That same night, Jimmy (Ed Speleers) goes out with Ivy (Cara Theobold) to see a Valentino film. After the movie, they start kissing on a bench, and Jimmy tries to go too far. A furious Ivy pulls away, and later recounts the incident to Mrs. Hughes and Mrs. Patmore (Lesley Nicol), with Daisy listening in the background. Ivy says Alfred would have never done that to her because he has too much respect. Daisy then yells at her for breaking his heart, and hers in the process. 

In Cora's room, Cora tells Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) that she overheard Bates telling Anna that she had been hurt, and he feels guilty for not being able to protect her. Baxter (Raquel Cassidy) overhears, and tells Thomas (Rob James-Collier) the gossip. Yet, Baxter tells Thomas that she doesn't feel right relaying the Countess' secrets to him.

The next day, Mr. Napier (Brendan Patricks) brings his boss Charles Blake (Julian Ovenden) to Downton, but Mary is less than pleased with his indifference about retaining old, aristocratic estates.

Later, a big party convenes for Lord Grantham's birthday party. After the party, the jazz band, led by African-American band leader Jack Ross (Gary Carr), surprises Lord Grantham and the rest of the partygoers.

At first, they look utterly shocked to see an African-American at Downton, but are all refreshingly modern and tolerant, and have a great time dancing throughout the night.

After the event, Mary goes downstairs to thank Mr. Carr and offer to pay for his services. While walking downstairs, Mary catches Rose and Jack canoodling in the kitchen.

On the next episode, "Downton's drove of pigs arrive, Robert departs, an unwelcome visitor appears, and illness descends. Mary and Blake may have found common ground, but Edith faces her troubles alone."
