Colin Kaepernick will be playing in the final year of his rookie contract with the San Francisco 49ers next season, but the vastly improved quarterback could sign a new contract in the offseason.

The 49ers are expected to make moves to secure a longterm deal with Kaepernick after the current season with sources saying that San Francisco has already laid out the structure of the contract extension that will be offered to the three-year veteran.

Despite failing to lead the 49ers to their second straight Super Bowl appearance, Kaepernick is expected to command a huge paycheck should the two parties decide to formalize a longterm agreement in the coming months.

The 26-year-old quarterback is coming off a stellar season with the 49ers, tallying a career-best 3,197 yards passing with 21 touchdown throws.

When asked about his expectation regarding the possible contract extension in the offseason, the popular QB said that he wants to be paid close to what his peers or other starting QBs are getting from their respective teams.

"I think it's a balance. You want to be paid fairly for what you feel like you're doing in comparison to your peers," Kaepernick said via CSN Bay Area.

The former Nevada standout quickly added that the 49ers should avoid offering a huge contract to him—that is, a huge-money deal that would hurt the team's chances of retaining other free agents.

Kaepernick stopped short of saying that he is willing to settle for less to put the 49ers in the best possible situation when it comes to building a championship-contending team in the next few years.

"But at the same time, you have to realize that if we want to get Anquan Boldin back, if we want Donte Whitner to come back, we're going to have to make moves to get them back and there has to be room for everyone," Kaepernick added. "And that's something that I'm going to let my agent and the organization try to figure out. But, hopefully, it's a situation where we can assemble the best team that we need."

Aside from his contract situation, Kaepernick added that he will work double time in the offseason and will work on his all-around game to have a better chance of finally winning his first Super Bowl next season.

"To me, I'm trying to focus on what I need to do to get ready for next season and improve myself so I can help improve this offense and ultimately help win the Super Bowl," Kaepernick declared.
