iOS vs. Android Market Share in Europe: Microsoft, Google Mobile OS Improve Across Top EU 5 Markets; Apple Inc., BlackBerry Slip

Microsoft's Windows Phone finally entered double-digit figures with the latest smartphone operating system market share among the top five European markets, or EU5.

According to Kantar Worldpanel, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, and United Kingdom represent the EU5.

Within the EU5, the Windows Phone platform saw an increase of its smartphone operating system market share by 5.3 percentage points when comparing the three-month period ending in November 2012 and November 2013. The percentage for Windows Phone was the second-highest increase in Kantar Worldpanel's latest data.

Despite the 5.3 percent increase, Windows Phone maintained its third place position in the EU5 with 10 percent for the three months ending in November 2013. During the same period in 2012, Windows Phone accounted for 4.7 percent.

Apple's iOS suffered the worst percentage loss in Kantar Worldpanel's latest data with 6.5 percentage points. iOS comfortably upheld its second place finish ahead of Windows Phone with 18.1 percent, which is a decrease from the 24.6 percent in 2012.

Google Android commanded first place for another consecutive smartphone operating system market share report. Android saw the highest percentage increase with 7.6 percentage points for a 69.1 percent finish during the three months ending in November 2013. The Google smartphone platform previously garnered 61.5 percent of the market share in 2012.

BlackBerry held fourth place again. BlackBerry saw a market share loss of 2.7 percentage points. As a result, BlackBerry finished November 2013 with 1.6 percent of the market share across the EU5.
