Huawei released the Honor 5X for the Chinese market in late 2015. After receiving strong appeal from the North American market, the mobile tech giant announced during CES 2016 that its latest mid-range handset will debut in the US before the end of January.

Surely enough, Huawei fans in the US can now purchase the Honor 5X for only $200 on Amazon. The smartphone has two RAM variants, but folks in the US will only be getting the unlocked 2 GB version. Color options include Sunset Gold, Dark Grey and Daybreak Silver.

The Honor 5X sports a 5.5-inch IPS LCD touchscreen with a 1920 x 1280 resolution display. Qualcomm's Snapdragon chipset is under the hood, carrying an octa-core processor and the Adreno 405 graphics processing unit.

As per the stat sheet from GSM Arena, The 2 GB of RAM is accompanied by 16 GB of internal memory that can be expanded up to 128 GB via support for micro-SD. The smartphone is also equipped with a fingerprint scanner. Android Headlines said the scanner is "extremely fast and accurate" due to its unlock time of 0.5 seconds. The lights are kept on by a non-removable Li-Ion 3000 mAh battery.

In the camera department, the Honor 5X is equipped with a 13-megapixel back camera that comes with dual-LED flash, autofocus, touch focus, face detection, panorama and f/2.0 aperture. Its rear-facing lens can record 1920 x 1080 videos in 30 frames per second. Meanwhile, selfies and video chats are handled by a five-megapixel front-facing camera.

The Honor 5X runs on the Android Lollipop 5.1.1 underneath Huawei's EMUI operating system. Android Central noted that the OS heavily draws inspiration from iOS, since it doesn't include a traditional app drawer. In order to optimize power usage, EMUI is set at the lowest performance option by default.

Users can change the default setting by navigating through the "Power saving" menu. There they can control the smartphone's performance and enable or disable specific apps running in the background. Since the Honor 5X supports Google services, users have the liberty of installing third-party launchers.

Additionally, the Honor 5X is fitted with its own screen protector straight out the box, shielding the handset from scratches and stains. The screen protector's oleophobic coating gives the Honor 5X extra resistance against finger smudges and grease.

Chris Chavez of Phandroid praised Huawei for not falling into the common smartphone trap of cramming as much hardware into a $200 device. He said the handset is just right for its modest price point. The Honor 5X affords "insane value" to most people, but not to those who are very meticulous about smartphone performance and software.
