"The Big Bang Theory" season 9 saw ups and downs in the characters' relationships, including Sheldon and Amy's break up.

Now, it seems like the long-time lovers, portrayed by Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik, are taking their relationship to the next level with showrunner, Steve Molaro, revealing what he believes is the best timing for the virgin couple to go all the way.

"After over five years of dating, we felt the time was right for Sheldon and Amy to finally consummate their relationship, and we're so excited for the audience to see the journey over the next several episodes," Molaro explained to Cinema Blend.

According to the recent report from outlet, Molaro believes that it is high time for the couple to finally get it on as they reach the fifth year of their on-again, off-again relationship.

"They've been together on and off for over five years and it just seemed to be a good way to ultimately resolve this journey they've been on, including this break-up as well. How long could we make this poor girl wait?!" the showrunner told The Hollywood Reporter.

Molaro also explained why they have decided to time the "big night" in the December 17 episode of the popular CBS TV series, doubling with the Bob Newhart episode.

"I liked that there was something unexpected about it. You could have easily made an episode like this be a season finale or something like that so why not pull the trigger when people think we may not. The stories lined up with Star Wars coming out. We were so excited about it and we felt it was time," he added.

Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter got word from TBBT co-creator, Chuck Lorre, on the highly anticipated breakthrough in Amy and Sheldon's relationship, which he believes has "floundered" in the show's season 9, particularly after the couple's biggest break up yet.

"It helped spur them to move forward and pursue their relationship more aggressively, having realized that you don't know what you've got until it's gone, as the song goes. That happened for Sheldon -- missing Amy was wearing on him in a way he hadn't anticipated," he told THR.

According to THR, the episode saw Sheldon torn with the decision on whether or not to see the new "Star Wars" movie during its opening night which happened to be Amy's birthday.

He chose to spend Amy's birthday with her, something equal to a big turn of events as per THR, considering how the highly intelligent character is "typically emotionally stunted."
