America Ferrera, best known for her titular role in the now-defunct TV series, Ugly Betty, will be returning to the small screens in January 2016 in NBC's new comedy, Superstore. The actress is thrilled at how much has changed since Ugly Betty went off the air in 2010.

Buzzfeed News reports that when Ugly Betty first aired in 2006, Latina representation was not very well represented as it is now. The premise of the show followed the titular character, Betty Suarez, a briliant college student who found herself working at Mode Magazine, the leading magazine in the fashion industry. While she found herself to be somewhat out of place at her superfical job, she had a rich family life to go home to. Suarez had a loving family in her father Ignacio (Tony Plana), older sister Hilda (Ana Ortiz), and nephew, Justin (Mark Indelicato).

Back in the day, the show was symbolic of a very underutilized demographic. Many cast members felt the weight on their shoulders as they knew that identifying with these characters would mean so many things to different people.

America Ferrera admitted that back in the Ugly Betty days, she had to be mindful of the news that the show was representing the only Latino family on television. The actress became the first Latina to win the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy in 2007.

She added that she wanted to see the day that it wouldn't be considered history when a black or Asian woman will be receiving an award. She added that it was sad to think that so much talent goes unrecognized. She said that being represented as 'the first' or 'the only' does not bring so much joy because it is a representation of so much talent and so many voices that haven't been heard yet. The actress feels very strongly about racism and has even penned an open letter to Donald Trump decrying his racist comments of Latinos, reports Huffington Post.

The 31-year old actress says that she is continuing the fight in January 2016. In the show, Superstore, she plays Amy, the compassionate boss of a store called Cloud 9. Ferrera is thrilled of the successes of actresses like Jane the Virgin's, Gina Rodriguez and Sofia Vergara. Ferrera is also excited for Jennifer Lopez's cop drama, Shades of Blue, and Vergara's comedy, Telenovela. She lauded the network for having Latinas front the TV projects.

America Ferrera added that the real victory is the fact that Hollywood is finally moving forward in a positive direction.

"We aren't just painted with one brush and we aren't under the same umbrella anymore and that's the real victory," she said.
