Starbucks Holiday Cups: Plain Red Cups 'Offend' Customersr for Being Anti-Christmas?

It smells (and tastes) like Christmas in all Starbucks stores around the world, with the reintroduction of their Christmas drinks and treats this holiday season.

However, while people are happily sipping their lattes and sandwiches, a lot of Christians have taken to their social media accounts their protest to the new Starbucks holiday cup, which, this year, is free of all designs, save for the fact that they're red instead of the traditional white.

According to Time Magazine, these protesters say that the cups are not only devoid of design, but are completely devoid of the spirit of Christmas, as well.

Joshua Feuerstein, in a viral post on Facebook said, "Starbucks REMOVED CHRISTMAS from their cups because they hate Jesus." He also encouraged customers to give their names as "Merry Christmas" to force the coffee franchise to say the phrase.

He wasn't the only one with the same sentiment, either. The movement set forth by Feuerstein (who claimed to be a former TV and radio evangelist) actually trended on Facebook on Sunday, with the hashtag, "MerryChristmasStarbucks".

Jeffrey Fields, the company's vice president of design and content explained why the company opted for a plain red design instead of the varying ones they had yearly since 1997. He shared that they want this year's design to be a "more open way to usher in the holidays," and not as a stand opposing Christmas itself.

"Starbucks has become a place of sanctuary during the holidays. We're embracing the simplicity and the quietness of it," he added.

In defense of Starbucks, Snopes pointed out that "anti-Christmas" does not carry a lot of weight in the company, nor their customers, considering that they still sell "Christmas Blend" coffee and Advent Calendars.

As Cosmopolitan noted, the chain's previous cup designs featured snowflakes, pine trees and even birds, and although they looked Christmas-sy, they're not exactly Christian-specific either.

But while there are a lot who ran with Feuerstein's "anti-Christmas" idea, some people have a more reasonable reaction toward the plain red cups.

One Twitter user, JR Forasteros said, "I am a Christian. I am not in any way offended by Starbucks cups. I am offended by violence. Racism. Abuse. Discrimination. Cups? No."

Another, Greg Woods, said, "Ashamed that some Christians are more concerned about a #WarOnChristmas than hungry people in our neighborhoods."

What do you think about the War of Christmas regarding the plain red cups, are you offended by them, or is this trend another fake opposition from a select group of people?
