The gaming console competition is mostly dominated by Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's PlayStation. At present, it looks like Nintendo is stepping up its game to go head-to-head with the two platforms.

Microsoft's marketing head Aaron Greenberg acknowledged in an interview with VentureBeat that Nintendo is gearing up to make waves in the gaming industry against the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but insisted that they are not threatened by it.

"I'm not sure what Nintendo's doing. I hear the same rumors and stuff that you do. I guess we'll react to that when we know more," Greenberg told VentureBeat. "Nintendo's always been innovative. They've always differentiated in their own way. They've always danced to their own tune, if you will. It wouldn't surprise me if they do their own thing when the time is right. What they've done is unique and different. How they'll compete with us remains to be seen."

Attack of the Fanboy wrote that not much is known about the NX console yet, though Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima said in a recent interview with Nikkei that the new NX console would be a "totally new gaming experience." The console will be launched in 2016.

In the meantime, the upcoming holiday season will showcase the top two gaming consoles: the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Xbox One announced their most interesting feature yet called the backward compatibility, which will be released on Nov. 10.

On the other hand, Sony said that PlayStation 4 will not offer backward compatibility like the Xbox One. Jim Ryan, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's president and CEO, said in an interview with Eurogamer that backward compatibility "is a feature that's not used that much," adding that the company is instead focusing on new games.

Xbox Bundles

Speaking about the bundle strategy of Microsoft, Greenberg said that the philosophy has two benefits: it gives customers more game choices and is a good tactic for business.

"Customers responded well. When we launched new bundles, like when we did the white 'Sunset [Overdrive]' bundle, we saw a jump. When we did the 'Call of Duty' bundle we saw a jump. This year, we started to plan and we had two things. We wanted to offer customers more choice, so whether you're a fan of 'Madden' or 'FIFA' or 'Tomb Raider' or 'Lego' - something more family friendly - we have an option for you," Greenberg told Venture Beat.

He added that the company has plenty of games to be available this coming holiday and they want to take advantage of that, the news outlet noted.
