Sony Pictures Animation has announced the cast of its upcoming computer-animated Smurf reboot.

"Get Smurfy" will feature Demi Lovato, Mandy Patinkin, and Rainn Wilson as Smurfette, Papa Smurf, and Smurf's nemesis Gargamel, respectively, Entertainment Weekly reported.

"The continued popularity of the Smurfs is unmistakable, and this new outing will return them to the fully-animated world that launched them," said director Kelly Asbury ("Shrek 2") of the project, as quoted by Entertainment Weekly.

"Get Smurfy" will feature Smurfette and her brothers as they travel through the Enchanted Forest in the hopes of finding the mythical Smurfs village before the evil Gargamel does, Deadline wrote. The upcoming film will finally answer the questions surrounding the Smurfs' origin, particularly the reason why there are 99 boys and only one girl.

Sony Pictures' Animation posted an accompanying video on YouTube to give fans a sneak peek of "Get Smurfy." Check out the clip below.

"We have gathered a group of filmmakers and artists who have grown up with these loveable characters, and 'Get Smurfy' will be imbued with the same spirit of adventure that first made all of us lifelong fans of these little blue guys...and girl," said Kristine Belson, president of Sony Pictures Animation, as quoted in a report from Variety.

The movie's 3D animation will be fashioned after the style of Smurfs creator Peyo Culliford. "Get Smurfy" is slated for release in theaters on March 17, 2017 and is produced by Jordan Kerner, Deadline noted. Mary Ellen Bauder of "Hotel Transylvania 2" is also co-producing, The Hollywood Reporter noted.

The cast line-up for "Get Smurfy" was announced together with Global Smurfs Day last Sunday, Variety added. In a statement, producer Kerner said that the movie will still have ties with the original story, but it will also provide a fresh take.

"We felt it was important to take a very different approach with this origin story. It returns to the roots of Peyo's creation in this CG-animated adventure," Kerner explained, as quoted by the news outlet. "I hope it will delight not only fans but audiences worldwide. We couldn't be more excited with the talented new cast we're starting to assemble for our 'Smurfy' reboot."

Sony's "The Smurfs" (2011) and "The Smurfs 2" (2013) earned more than a combined $900 million when it was released internationally."Get Smurfy" marks as the first fully animated film of the franchise, The Hollywood Reporter wrote.

Prior to "Get Smurfy," the production studio will release "Hotel Transylvania 2" on September 25, 2015, which features the voices of Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, and Andy Samberg.
