"Elementary" has cast the British actor who will portray Sherlock Holmes' dad.

Several sources, including Entertainment Weekly, have reported that John Noble, one of the lead stars of Fox's "Fringe," will play the estranged father of the titular character (Jonny Lee Miller). The elder Holmes has only been referenced in the CBS series since it debuted in 2012, but he has been a prominent figure when it comes to bringing Joan Watson (Lucy Liu) into Sherlock's life as his sober companion, eventually becoming his partner as a consultant detective for the NYPD.

"We could not be more delighted to have John Noble taking on such an important role," executive producer Robert Doherty said, as quoted by Entertainment Weekly. "We've enjoyed his work for many years now - especially his tremendous run on 'Fringe' - and cannot wait to see him opposite Jonny and Lucy. It's going to be an exciting season."

Noble, 66, will be joining the cast as a series regular when the fourth season of "Elementary" returns to CBS on Thursdays this fall, TV Line reported.

In a separate interview with Entertainment Weekly, Doherty has provided details about the character of Sherlock's father, and it looks like the elder Holmes doesn't differ that much from his son.

"Sherlock's dad, like Sherlock, is a complicated man," he told the news outlet. "When Sherlock has described him, he hasn't painted a picture of a very loving father... and yet it's worth noting this will be the second time he's taken steps to help his son during a difficult time."

Noble also expressed his excitement on his upcoming involvement in the American crime drama series. He tweeted: "Thanks for all the support. This is a great show, great cast & writers. It will be a wonderful new challenge. Can't wait!"

Doherty also said in an interview with TV Line that the team behind "Elementary" felt that "it's time" for Sherlock to reunite with his father. According to the executive producer, the two's "complicated dynamic" since Season 1 paves way to a good storyline, with plenty of avenues to explore, the news outlet added.

In the series' Season 4 premiere, Noble's character will arrive in NYC "to deal with the aftermath of his son's recent relapse," TV Line reported from CBS.

Season 3's finale saw Sherlock being forced to work with his former drug dealer, Oscar (Michael Weston), in order to save his friend, Alfredo (Ato Essandoh). Eventually, the detective yielded to his old ways as a drug user and broke his sobriety, TV Line noted.

As for the repercussions of Sherlock's relapse, Doherty hinted to TV Line that the genius PI's setback will have an effect on his relationship with Joan.

"Elementary" also stars Aidan Quinn (Capt. Tobias Gregson) and Jon Michael Hill (Det. Marcus Bell).
